Island of Lost Souls FINALLY Makes Its Way To DVD and Blu-Ray!

New postby ObscureCinema101 » Tue Jul 26, 2011 9:10 pm

Few films have been wanted on DVD more than Island of Lost Souls (1932). I actually have not seen this supposed classic, but its fanbase is unbelievable. It has won the Rondo award FIVE YEARS IN A ROW for most-wanted DVD release, plus it currently has a 7.8/10 rating on IMDB and an 89% critic's rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It's the first film version of H. G. Wells' Island of Dr. Moreau, about a mad doctor who turns people into animals.

Now, Island of Lost Souls is finally coming to DVD and Blu-Ray as part of The Criterion Collection! You may remember The Criterion Collection released such films as Videodrome, Cronos, and The Blob with high-def transfers and lots of bonus features, and they're not skimping on this release! The pre-order price on the website is $31.96 for the Blu-Ray and it's set to be released on October 25. DVD FEATURES:

-New high-definition digital restoration of the uncut theatrical version (with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition)
-Audio commentary by film historian Gregory Mank, author of Bela Lugosi and Boris
Karloff and Hollywood’s Maddest Doctors
-New video conversation among filmmaker John Landis (An American Werewolf in
London), Oscar-winning makeup artist Rick Baker (An American Werewolf in London,
Videodrome), and genre expert Bob Burns
-New interviews with horror film historian David J. Skal (The Monster Show: A Cultural
History of Horror); filmmaker Richard Stanley (Hardware, original director of the ill-fated
1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau)
-New interviews with Devo founding members Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh,
whose manifesto is rooted in themes from Island of Lost Souls
-Theatrical trailer
-PLUS: A booklet featuring a new essay by critic Christine Smallwood
